Most of the paintings in this series began with compositions I created by attempting to recall places I’ve lived from memory. Once I had an initial, inevitably faulty map of each place I was remembering, I reworked the colours and shapes in ways that accepted or emphasized the inaccuracies in my memories and superimposed other experiences on top of them.

They were all created in gouache and oil paint on clear-gessoed wood panels or plywood.

Four of the largest pieces in the series originally fit together in a large piece called Monument to Forgetting. The shape of the monument was inspired by Jochen Gerz and Esther Shalev-Gerz’s 1986 public installation “Monument Against Fascism.”
